Igloo Magic

The recent snow days inspired me to do a bit of shooting just for fun.  Of course my idea of fun involves walking around looking like an idiot carrying several light stands and radio equipment.  The neighbors aren’t yet used to it, but they’re a liberal and tolerant lot, so they don’t hassle me too much.

But I do get a lot of questions, mostly along the lines of “why are you carrying all that stuff?”  It’s tough sometimes to explain why one would need two light stands, a tripod and radio gear just to shoot a couple of photos in the snow, but these two images provide a good visual example.  Both images are exposed the same, with the same camera and lens, and almost exactly the same position (The tripod is slightly higher on the second shot).

The only difference is that on the second image I activated the two strobes, which surround the igloo in angular light which is significantly warmer (yellow) in color than the light coming through the clouds, causing the latter to appear blue.
